Try these money saving vacation tips (or how your underwear can save you money)

For most of us, vacations are a necessary time for rest and relaxation. Financial worries need not get in the way. Here’s how:

  1. Start planning early, and with a budget in mind. Experts say that planning well can lead to significant savings. Finding “out-of-the-way” hotels, restaurants that are favored by the locals, and booking reservations well in advance are all common travel economy tips. The important thing is to get an idea, early on, about the level of expense the trip will require. This avoids surprises to your bank balance.
  2. Make a daily cash budget. You always spend less when your only means of paying for something is cash. So, set your daily cash budget and limit yourself to that amount each day. You will be amazed at how well this helps you prioritize expenditures. And you will be happy knowing you are in control of the vacation, rather than the other way around.
  3. Don’t try to out-gift. Something about vacation brings out the benefactor in people. That’s a good thing when your financials will support it, a bad thing when they won’t. Having a budget, and a daily cash allowance will allow you to do good things within your means – a “win-win” if ever there was one.
  4. Plan NOT to be on “Hoarders” where all the stuff you bought is video-taped. Avoid the trap of buying that local “artifact” manufactured in some sweat-factory of a 3rd world country. If you don’t need it, and if the thought of having the crew from the TV show “Hoarders” strikes reasonable fear into your heart, leave it for the unsophisticated, undisciplined tourist standing right behind you.
  5. Experienced travelers leave their underwear behind. The best travel tip we ever heard was from an elderly lady who traveled with her husband for the better part of 30 years. Her advice: buy underwear and casual clothes that you can pack and wear on vacation but don’t mind leaving in the trash at the hotel. It makes the trip back home much less arduous, and gives you room to bring home gifts for friends and family in your suitcases which saves money in shipping and baggage fees. There’s something about throwing your underwear away on vacation that makes the whole trip a lot more fun and makes for a great story later!
