Seems like everywhere we go, we hear people taking about “going green.” Makes us wonder just how does one go about going green? How hard is it really? And, if you decide to take the plunge, just how much good can one person do?

HummingbirdAs it turns out, going green is an easy way for the average person to make a big difference to the world around us. And, if you happen to be a business owner, even if it’s a small business, taking your company green is a very good thing.

We’ve done a very brief cruise around the Internet and came up with some simple ways most anybody can go green. Take a look and see if you don’t agree: this is pretty simple and very worthwhile.

Manage The Inside Temperature. Each degree you turn down the heat saves 3 percent of heating costs, while each degree you raise the temperature of your air conditioner saves 3-4 percent of cooling costs. By changing the temperature by 2 degrees all year, you can save about 2,000 pounds of C02 a year.

Wash Clothes In Cold Water. That will save 80 percent on energy involved in the laundry. Even better, hang your clothes outside to dry–if your area permits it.

Turn Off The Lights When You Leave The Room. You’ll reduce your direct lighting energy use by 45 percent. Get rid of halogen lamps – they produce a lot of heat your air conditioner has to deal with. Oh, and install those cool switches that turn lights on and off when you enter or leave the room.

Lose The Old Fashioned Incandescent Light Bulbs. Switch to compact fluorescent and use up to 60 percent less energy per bulb.

If You Own A Car, Keep Your Tires Well Inflated. Why? It improves gas mileage about 3 percent.

Cut Down Or Eliminate Non-Green Products. There are no green alternatives for items such as rubber bands. I don’t know if I could give up rubber bands. That may be asking too much. But I bet you have everyday products that could be replaced.

Use A Power Strip To Manage Electrical Devices. Plug as many devices as possible into a power strip and then turn them all off at once with the power strips master switch.

Switch To A Laptop Computer. Using a laptop computer will cut three-quarters off your computer’s electrical use – and don’t forget to turn it off at the end of the day.

Cook With A Slow Cooker Or Toaster Oven. This will reduce electrical use from kitchen appliances. For a meal that requires one hour to cook in an electric oven, and which uses 2.7 pounds of C02, a crockpot uses 0.9 pounds of C02 for seven hours, a toaster oven takes 1.3 pounds of C02 for 50 minutes, and a microwave only 0.5 pounds of C02 for 15 minutes of cooking. (A solar cooker would require even less!)

Wrap Your Water Heater In An Insulation Blanket. This is a no brainer. Also, insulate your hot water pipes.
